Hi everyone,
I'm getting ready to release Whirl World, my unique drawing app for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad that is made with Sparrow and want to ask about your opinion on an In App Purchase.
By default, Whirl World comes with 6 colors to draw with, but I would like the user to be able to add more. What do you think about having a $0.99 IAP for 10 more colors, that the user would choose?
I'm not sure how reasonable this is. I have chosen to make Whirl World free to accumulate a larger user base, but I don't want to just give away all my hard work.
Thanks for your ideas,
Brian

That's a tough question.
I think your app is really creative and enjoyable, but I honestly don't see anyone spending money for more colors, on it's own. The only thing I could suggest is throwing in ads for the free version, and then for $0.99 the user can remove the ads and add all the extra colors, along with whatever else you'd like to give for a bonus.

Hello Brian,
one risk making it free is: It may be downloaded by some bored idiots who give negative reviews - and you now that may be the deathblow of an app - even it is free.
I think there are enough users which will buy for a good app. So make clear what purpose your app is for and list the possibilities to prevent disappointed users.
What always is a good decision helper for me is a video (and of course meaningful screenshots) to show the app or game in action. So the user don't buy a pig in a poke and couldn't be disappointed because "what he see is what he get". And this may result in good reviews and lure new potential buyers.

Ok, thanks for the input Shilo and Jugibur. That really helps me a lot, although I would still like more opinions.
Shilo, I understand what you mean about it being a tough sell. I have already put ads in the free version, and will charge $0.99 to remove them. For now, I will make it completely free to add as many colors as you want. In the future, I would like to introduce seasonal "add-ons" for $0.99 where you can get in one pack, for example, Halloween colors and different brushes, like pumpkins, witches, ghosts, and candy. What do you think of that?
Jugibur, I appreciate your concerns. I am still going to make the app free, but I will be very careful to make sure that buyers aren't disappointed. In my opinion, even in it's current state, anyone who plays with it for 5 min won't be. I will ensure that the screenshots and demo video represent Whirl World well.
Thanks again,

I agree with shilo that charging $0.99 for more colors is a tough sell. But if you include other add-ons like brushes and seasonal stuff like you suggested then I think it should be fine.
I don't know if this is true, but I heard that some company owns the patent for "in-app purchasing" and that it is sending threatening letters to all developers that are using it. Do you guys know anything about that? :p

Thanks for your input Bart! I also heard about that patent trolling stuff. Last I knew, developers were refusing to pay them and Apple told them to back down. I'm pretty sure Lodsys didn't want to spar with Apple and stopped threatening developers.

Brian, I like the idea of different swatches for seasonal add-ons. Start with christmas ones!
Lodsys is the definition of a patent d***head!

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, has unveiled new apps for the iPad and the iPhone that offer a much improved experience for shopping on your touch screen devices. This well timed release comes ahead of the holiday shopping season. Walmart decided to make a move into the mobile space. Towards this end, the business has produced @WalmartLabs and purchased four social media companies. Walmart purchases fourth social app developer. This appears to be Walmart’s latest effort to integrate both social media and ubiquitous smartphones into the shopping experience in Walmart stores.
