I was just wondering if anyone has found a way to play sound effects without stopping music from the ipod app (if it's running)?
I can detect if the ipod app is running but once I start the sparrow sound engine any other music is halted.
If not it's no biggy, I can not start the sparrow sound engine and play sound effects some other way if need be.
fixed it myself, this is ridiculously easy. Kudos Daniel
(check for audio is playing in ipod app)

obviously this doesn't work in the simulator.

Hi Liam,
that's easy to do, fortunately! How iPod-music behaves can be configured if you initialize the audio session with an additional parameter, like this:
[SPAudioEngine start:SPAudioSessionCategory_AmbientSound];
The default value (when you just call 'start') is 'SoloAmbientSound', which stops all iPod sounds if playback of a game sound starts. I think 'AmbientSound' is what you need.
Find more about the audio session categories in the iOS SDK documentation. (Search for 'Audio Session Categories'). Sparrow uses the same categories, it's just the prefix that changes ('SP' instead of 'k').

I tried toggling between SPAudioSessionCategory_AmbientSound and SPAudioSessionCategory_SoloAmbientSound
using [SPAudioEngine stop] followed by [SPAudioEngine start:mycategory];
Unfortunately, the results appear to be inconsistent. Sometimes the sound comes back, sometimes the sound doesn't.
The reason I do this is: if the user clicks on "enable move sounds" I want to use the category AmbientSound. whereas if a user clicks on "enable game music" I want to use the category SoloAmbientSound.
Anyone got a code sample where this works consistently?

Hm, I'll have to browse through the audio session documentation myself, I can't remember enough of it right now to answer that question! But here is Apple's documentation on that subject (Sparrow just forwards the calls to those classes), perhaps it contains useful information!

Thanks Daniel. On going through the documetentation, I changed SPAudioengine:start in my copy of Sparrow to:

Now, if audio is already playing, I don't play the game music. If not, the game music plays if the player opts for game music.
