Hello all, names Mike. First time posting into the forums, but I've been experimenting with sparrow for about a month now.
A little about myself first… I'm a php and mysql developer mainly. Just starting to learn Obj-C but I'm getting the hang pretty quick. Essentially I started working on a side scroller experiment for iOS. I've run into a development problem where I feel like I need some guidance.
I will do my best to explain it here, excuse my photoshop drawings…. but they will help visualize what I'm trying to figure out.
Heres what I've got so far:
Basic stage setup, with a sprite character.
Movement of sprite is based on the SHThumbstick (which is awesome btw)
I've set up basic things like a moving background and detecting touch coordinates outside of joystick.
But this is where I realized I have no idea where to start with the next phase of development.
Where does one begin to design a "level" with detectable ground coordinates for a sprite to move along. I don't know how clear im being, so let me draw a picture.
Coordinates : http://i.imgur.com/zhhKo.jpg
Those would be the coordinates of walkable ground in the scene.
Full Scene: http://i.imgur.com/Rjepq.png
This is what the scene would look like with the walkable area in black still.
Obviously the level would be much longer than this.... but im trying to simplify for explanation purposes.
Now I'm assuming that this could be set up with an XML file with coordinates of the ground, but how would someone SCROLL a background (And xml coordinates to make the char follow the ground? Also you'll notice the "house" roof…. I'm assuming if you can make one walkable surface, you should be able to program multiple and "jump" from one to another in some fashion.
I must admit I am absolutely lost on where to go and I would really appreciate any guidance anyone could give me.
The other thing I've realized is am I maybe going about this the completely wrong direction? Is there any easier way to make "level design" for something to interact with. Everything has been pretty cut and dry up till now…. I feel very lost and feel like there are no real side scrolling resources to pull from for me.
THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE. I look forward to being much more active in the sparrow community in the future.
