I put it in my app delegate but the music is stopped as the app loads.
Hm ... what kind of audio are you playing back? I think the iPhone can't decode 2 compressed tracks simultaneously, perhaps that's what's happening.

That could be it I had caf and an aifc playing. I'll just leave it then.
Did you simply add the line, or did you actually replace any other instances of SPAudioEngine start? SPAudioEngine does not start again after the initial start unless it is explicitly stopped. What enbr told you is correct, so the only way I can see this happening is if you have [SPAudioEngine start] above this line.
