Merging the forums

Daniel, have you considered merging the starling and sparrow forums?

I ask because sparrow seems to have some great folks on it, however there is no "general iOS development" section, which seems like a shame, a kind of a waste of a good community.

And presuming starling is equally full of good peeps, they'd have a lot of knowledge that perhaps steps beyong the bounds of "just starling" too.

I would still imagine there would be a sparrow section, a starling section ('cos things would get confused otherwise) but then expanding the miscellaneous section to include app store, app dev, marketing or whatever.

Just a suggestion, not a problem if it never happens, but interesting nonetheless...

We actually thought about this for a long time; it would be great to have a "Gamua" forum that contains all the posts from all frameworks in one place.

The problem is that bbPress is just not able to pull this off properly. One example: if all content is in one forum, you need to be able to limit the search to a certain framework. bbPress can only limit searches to one subforum, not a category.

There are more problems like that; e.g. the categories would need to be in the URL, e.g. "gamua.com/forum/starling/troubleshooting/blahblah". That looks like a cosmetic thing, but we'd need that to be able to merge the forums together AND be able to reliably forward from old URLs to the same content in the merged forums.

So ... as you will have noticed, we've spent quite a while discussing if this would be possible; because Holger and me would very much like that to happen. But we're both not very good in PHP, and changing bbPress to our needs would just take too long, compared to the gain.

So this issue has been postponed for now. 😉
